In 2050, Peterborough, the east side of the city is predicted to flood periodically. Peterborough Cathedral rests on higher terrain than most of the city. This project proposes that the Cathedral becomes a haven for flood refugees with destroyed homes, and temporary flood refugees waiting for their houses to dry.
Peterborough Cathedral is distinct in the fact that it represents 3 Christian saints: Peter, Paul & Andrew. Peter is the patron saint of fishermen, shipbuilders and stonemasons. This inspired the creation of Peter’s Towers, communal water facilities where the refugees shower and wash laundry.
Paul is the patron saint of writers, public workers and tent makers, which influenced the creation of Paul’s Yurts; tents in the style of traditional Mongolian Gers with size variation of 2-4 people.
Andrew is the patron saint of textile workers and protection against diseases. Carrying on this theme of protection, Andrew’s Homes were created for people with destroyed homes.

REFUGE PLAN
BARTLETT, Y2, PROJECT 3, UNIT 7, 2022
This Plan shows how the 3 building types, Peter’s Towers, Paul’s Yurts and Andrew’s Homes, fit onto the timber platform. The timber platform is raised above the ground by Limestone piles for easy construction and environmental conservation.

The platform is accessible for everyone with stairs & ramps. This village is situated right behind the Cathedral, with the possibility of expansion and replication of this platform format. Paul’s Yurts are especially easy to build and dismantle for emergency flood refugees.
